Charles J. ‘Buckwheat’ Secrest, 84, of Burnham, passed away Thursday morning, Oct. 10, 2019, surrounded by his loving family. Born Jan. 9, 1935 in Mt. Union, he was a son of the late Jackson L. and Bessie F. (Arnold) Secrest. His wife of 63 years, Nancy Hancock Secrest, survives. Also surviving are: children, Rodney M. Secrest and wife Candace of Bedford, Lori Secrest Artman of Lewistown; siblings, Bonnie M. Wiley of Bakersfield, Ca., Nora M. Winfree of Mt. Union, Richard Secrest of Silverdale, Wa., Rexall Secrest of Mt. Union, Jackson L. Secrest, Jr., of West Chester; grandchildren, Justin Secrest and wife Kim, Lyndsey Wilson, Maggi Secrest; great grandchildren, Lily, Madison, Bennett, Blake and Greta; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by siblings: infant Rodney M. Secrest, Jacqueline Moist, Rosa S. Yocum and Gary L. Arnold. Earlier in life he played professional baseball for Kansas City Athletics, and had retired from Standard Steel in 1998 as a crane operator. He was a 1954 graduate of Captain Jack High School, where he lettered in 3 sports. He was well known locally for his athletic ability. He was a member of Sugar Run Church of the Brethren, and enjoyed woodworking and antiques.
A memorial service for family and friends will be held, 12:00 noon, Friday, Oct. 18, 2019, at Sugar Run Church of the Brethren, with Pastor Jim Hullihen officiating.
