Richard Gene McKelvey, 90, passed away peacefully on December 22 at home in Reedsville.
Gene was born on March 22, 1931, to Clyde Raymond and Fannie Mae (Rice) McKelvey in Altoona.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley (Venerick) McKelvey; his son, Timothy and partner, Greg; his grandson, Rick, and wife, Kelly; his great grandchildren, Gavin, Olivia and Caleb; his nephew, John, and wife, Audrey; and many other nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his son, Rick, and by his brothers and sister.
Gene graduated from Altoona High School in 1951 and worked for the Pennsylvania Railroad. Later, he worked as an insurance agent with American General Life Insurance Company.
Gene had much to be grateful for and proud of in this life, most especially his two boys and his seventy-year marriage to Shirley. He served his country for eight years in the Air Force, including a tour of duty in Korea, and achieved the rank of Staff Sergeant. In addition, he and Shirley founded Boal Gap Kennels, a successful business venture of fifteen years.
Gene was a lifelong member of the Glen Burnie, MD, Lodge of Free Masons. He was also a member of Kish Valley Grace Brethren Church, whose fellowship he valued and appreciated.
A service will take place at the convenience of the family.
