Wayne Usko Obituary

Wayne Scott Usko, 85, of Reedsville, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, April 23, 2023 at Geisinger-Lewistown Hospital surrounded by his loved ones.

                He was born on May 12, 1937 in Lewistown. He was the son of Frank A. and Jean F. (Hoffman) Usko. He married his high school sweetheart, Sharee L. (Wagner) Usko on March 25, 1956, with whom he was blessed to share 67 years of marriage.

                He is survived by: his children, Wendy Herst & husband Mark of Harrisburg; Tami Rook of Reedsville; and Joni Novacich & husband Kenneth of Middleburg, VA. He also leaves behind four grandchildren, Eric Rook & wife Katee, Kraig Herst & wife Megan; Kevin Herst, and Jared Novacich; four great-grandchildren, Kara Rook, Evan Rook, Kaden Herst, and Landen Herst, as well as a brother, David Usko of Lewisberry, York County.

                He was preceded in death by: a son-in-law, Steven Rook, a sister-in-law, Ardis Usko and a brother-in-law, Kenneth Kephart.           

                Wayne graduated from Armagh-Brown High School in 1956, where he excelled playing basketball, baseball, and track & field. He also played in the Twlight Baseball League for Milroy, the Milroy American Legion, the Mifflin County fast-pitch softball league, and the New Holland fast-pitch softball league.

                He retired in 1992 from Ford-New Holland in Belleville after 36 years of service. He was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Siglerville, where he sang in the church choir, in addition to being a Sunday school teacher, superintendent of the Sunday school, church sexton, financial secretary, and a council member.                

                Wayne was a life member of the NRA and the Mifflin County Historical Society. He was also a member of the Civil War Trust, Central Virginia Battlefield Trust, Gettysburg Foundation, George Washington’s Mount Vernon, Coffee Run Fish Club, and the Milroy Fire Company. He was a volunteer for the Pennsylvania Clean Ways.

                He enjoyed fishing, especially for trout, watching & feeding the birds, woodworking, riding his bike around the neighborhood, golfing, and grilling at family picnics.

                Wayne was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather and will be missed by his family and friends.

                Per Wayne’s wishes, there will be no services. In lieu of flowers, should friends desire, memorials may be made to: St. John’s Lutheran Church, PO Box 451, Milroy, PA 17063; the Mifflin County Historical Society, 1 West Market St., Lewistown, PA  17044; or to Milroy Fire Company, PO Box 326, Milroy, PA  17063.
